Nick Helyer has been managing his 1,425-acre farm at Little Langford near Wilton since 1965, when he took it over from his father who had worked the farm since 1941. After more than 50 years as a dairyman, there’s not much Nick doesn’t know about cattle, milk yields and the efficient running of his farm.
AirWash Plus, however, is a development that even took Nick by surprise. Milking 200 cows twice a day he has been able to reduce his milking time by an hour as well as seing significant drops in somatic cell counts, mastitis and Bactoscan readings.
Overall, Nick sees the installation of AirWash Plus at Little Langford as a great success.
Within 10 months of installing AirWash Plus, dairy farmer Richard Pike was able to reduce milking times by 30 minutes, immediately saving an hour a day. With 160 cows in milk on average he has sold 9,350 literes of milk in the period and there have only been seven cases of mastitis. The somatic cell count has stayed below 120 since installation and Bactoscan has remained at 15 or below.
“AirWash Plus is a ‘no brainer’ for a tandem parlour,” says Richard. “With no pre-dip or dry wiping, milking is now simple but effective and the quality of our milk has been maintained at high levels.”
Gary Dalton is rightly proud of the efficiency of his milking operations for which he uses a DeLaval Auto Tandem parlour to milk 210 cows three times a day. The addition of AirWash Plus has enhanced an operation that was already very good and the key attribute for Gary has been the time saved by the system. He has found the dip to be very effective, applying exactly the right amount and no more, which helps to keep costs under control and SCC and Bactoscan counts down.
